Carnal Taqueria — Mexico’s Street Food Flag Planted in a Ribes Square

The excellent Carnal taqueria sits across from Sant Pere’s picturesque ayuntamiento on Plaça la Font, offering a terrace in a proper old-town square. Setting the fare apart from most local competition, the tacos, quesadillas, and antojitos are gluten-free, but you won’t miss it. Proprietors Paula and Nico say they aimed to bring a piece of Mexico to Sant Pere de Ribes, and we’re grateful for the effort. Carnal’s house slogan, comer mejor con las manos, tells you all you need to know.

Excellent margaritas, a good selection Mexican beers and tequilas, and the made-in-house dessert — a kind of cheesecake/tiramisu/dolce de leche in a glass that you pass back and forth for spoonfuls like a peacepipe — round out the menu perfectly. Nico, who also runs Matt’s Café around the corner, has clearly built a following in Ribes; the room fills quickly on weekend evenings and spills outside, so get their bang on open if you can. A second location in Vilanova i la Geltrú confirms that the concept has legs beyond the village square.
